Retro Split-Flap

Karlsson Flip Clocks — Mini, Big & No Case

Split-flap flip clocks are back — and Karlsson does them best. Compare the Mini, Big and exposed No Case models.

Karlsson Big Flip calendar clock showing day and date on an oak shelf

The flip clock is Karlsson's most talked-about range, and rightly so. Split-flap calendar displays — the same mechanism that used to click over train-station departure boards — are properly tactile in a way that digital screens can never quite match. Watching the flaps turn at midnight to reveal a new date is a tiny daily ritual, and unlike most novelty products it actually improves a desk or a shelf rather than cluttering it.

Karlsson sells flip clocks in two signature sizes. The Mini Flip is palm-sized, tabletop, and designed to sit on a desk, bedside or open shelf. The Big Flip is wall-mountable (or can sit on a wider mantel) and fits the full time/day/date display with bigger, easier-to-read cards. A third line — the No Case version — strips the housing entirely and exposes the raw flap mechanism, steel frame and all. It gives a workshop-meets-industrial look that suits loft spaces, creative studios and anywhere you want the clock to feel like a functional object rather than decor.

Below are the four flip clocks we currently rate. Colour options rotate seasonally — olive, cream, dusty pink and matte black are the most consistently available.

Mini vs. Big — which to pick

The Mini is the better first Karlsson flip clock. It's cheaper, more portable, sits happily on a desk, and shows time only — which means less to go visually wrong. The Big is for people who already love the format and want the full calendar display. Expect it to become a real focal point of the room: the larger cards are legible from across an open-plan living-kitchen.

The No Case edition, explained

The No Case versions remove the outer housing and leave the flap mechanism, wheels and steel frame visible. Mechanically it's the same clock, just dressed down. Visually it's a completely different object — it reads as industrial hardware rather than decor and works best in raw-material rooms with exposed brick, concrete floors or steel shelving. In a soft, traditional living room it looks slightly out of place.

How loud is a flip clock?

Honestly? Quieter than you'd expect. The flap makes a soft click once per minute (the seconds are analogue or silent, depending on model), and the louder cascade of flaps only happens on the hour change. It's a nice sound — closer to a wooden domino falling than any mechanical tick. For bedrooms, though, we'd still choose a silent-sweep clock instead.

Styling flip clocks

Flip clocks photograph beautifully on oak or walnut shelves next to a small stack of hardcover books and a single plant. Avoid hanging them above cluttered desks — the mechanism deserves some negative space. The olive and cream versions soften modern kitchens; the black and No Case versions sharpen up a minimalist office. Pair them with our Charm series for a nicely layered Karlsson corner.

Buyer Questions

Quick Answers Before You Buy

The questions UK buyers most often ask us about this range.

Are Karlsson flip clocks mechanical or battery-powered?

They're battery-powered quartz. The tiles flip via an internal motor rather than a spring mechanism, so there's no winding. Typical battery life is 6-12 months on alkaline AAs depending on model. The flip sound is deliberate and mechanical-feeling even though the drive is electric.

How loud is the flip sound?

Each minute change is a soft 'thwip'. At night in a quiet bedroom you can hear it from a couple of metres. During the day in an active space it's essentially invisible. If sound is a concern, consider a silent-sweep model from our silent range instead.

What's the difference between Mini Flip, Big Flip and No Case?

Mini Flip is the desktop/small-wall size (around 12 cm tall). Big Flip is the wall-sized version. No Case strips the outer shell away and exposes the flipping tiles and mechanism — an industrial, almost kinetic-sculpture look. All three use the same core movement.

Do flip clocks show the day and date?

Yes — most Karlsson flip models show hours, minutes, day and date on separate flipping tile stacks. Setting them takes a minute with small recessed buttons on the back.
